There they are persuaded by the NASA mission director (Hal Holbrook) to take part in a simulation designed to convince the world that they actually landed on Mars. Simpson play three astronauts about to undertake the inaugural mission to Mars when they are hiked out of their capsule and spirited away to a decommissioned army base. It encounters this same problem, embroiling itself in ever-deeper credibility issues as it tells how this could have happened but having reached a probability dead-end it tries to crunch a resolution with the most inappropriate ending of any film I can recall.

The astronauts have no choice but to co-operate. They are ordered to participate in an elaborate charade, simulating a Martian landing as cameras roll and with the entire world as an audience. The astronauts are removed from their spacecraft to an abandoned desert hangar and told that their life support systems have malfunctioned. The whole world is watching the first manned flight to Mars, but its three astronauts are plunged into a hair-raising battle for survival within a clandestine operation involving intrigue and murder.
